Mesa Latina spearheaded the 2013 to change the current rule and expand the Minnesota driver’s license program to allow undocumented drivers to apply for a Minnesota driver’s license. Mesa Latina worked closely again with Representative Karen Clark and introduced HF348 on February 4t , 2013. The Senate version of the bill was introduced on the same day and was authored by State Senator Bobby Joe Champion. The Minnesota Senate passed the bill before the end of the 2013 legislative session. In the House, the bill was stalled in Committees through 2013 and 2014 and was finally heard in the Ways and Means Committee during the last day of the 2014 legislative session where Committee members approved its passage to the House floor. However, house leadership decided that the bill was potentially too controversial and did not allow a floor vote regardless of the bipartisan support that the bill had earned.
