Geanella O.

Director of Environmental Justice

Geanella has served as a Foreign Service Officer for Ecuador since 2012 (currently on extended leave/availability from the Government of Ecuador), with a strong background in international relations, climate justice, and global social justice. She currently serves as Director of Environmental Justice at COPAL MN, where she leads community activism on issues of environmental equity, clean energy, and climate change in Latinx and BIPOC communities. Geanella has represented Ecuador in high-level international negotiations within the United Nations system, including the climate change conferences (COP26 and COP27), and has led initiatives related to human rights, migration, inclusion, and sustainable development.


Geanella has an academic background in sociology and environmental engineering; she holds a master’s degree in international relations and is a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership at Minnesota State University, Mankato. She speaks Spanish, English, and Italian, and has worked extensively with migrant communities in Minnesota. Her comprehensive approach combines diplomacy, education, and community organizing to advance fair and inclusive public policies, both locally and internationally.
