COPAL Denounces Violent Attack on Minnesota Leaders: We Stand for a Democracy of Dialogue, Not Destruction

COPAL mourns and expresses deep outrage following the reported targeted shootings of long-time lawmaker Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman. Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark have also tragically been confirmed deceased.

The attacks were allegedly carried out by individuals impersonating law enforcement officers. As our state is shocked by this devastating loss, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all the families enduring profound trauma and grief.

This is not just an act of violence it is a vile assault on our democracy. A society rooted in justice must allow for disagreement without fear. Our political process should never be shaped by violence or intimidation. In a moment when fear is spreading throughout our communities in Minnesota, further fueled by recent immigration enforcement actions, COPAL stands with all Minnesotans who believe in peace and dialogue.

As community members gather to protest their grief and frustration, we urge everyone to do so peacefully. The ache is real, and so is the demand for democracy. Our strength lies in unity, the fight for democracy, and nonviolence.
