Know Your Rights: Earned Sick and Safe Time and Workplace Equity and Protection

In Minnesota, laws are in place to protect workers and ensure fair labor conditions. Two key laws are Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) and the Women’s Economic Security Act (WESA). Here’s what they mean for you and your family.

🏥 Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST): Your Health is a Priority
As of January 1, 2024, all Minnesota workers who work at least 80 hours per year are entitled to paid sick leave. This law allows you to:
✅ Earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked (up to 48 hours per year).
✅ Use your leave to care for your own health or that of a family member.
✅ Take time off to address situations related to domestic violence or sexual abuse.
✅ Use your leave without fear of employer retaliation.

Your health and well-being matter! If your employer does not comply with this law, you can contact the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry at 📞 651-284-5075 or 800-342-5354.

👩‍💼 Women’s Economic Security Act (WESA): Workplace Equity and Protection
The Women’s Economic Security Act aims to create fairer workplaces, especially for pregnant and breastfeeding workers. Some of the benefits include:
✅ Safe and private spaces (not a restroom) for expressing breast milk at work.
✅ Paid break time for breastfeeding, without a pay reduction or requirement to make up hours.
✅ Protection against workplace discrimination, especially during pregnancy and motherhood.

If you face obstacles in exercising these rights, contact the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.

📢 Why is it important to know these laws?
Access to fair labor conditions strengthens our entire community. When we know our rights, we can demand compliance and ensure dignity at work.
