Across our communities, families continue to live with fear, uncertainty, and the consequences of increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement. Communities are mourning lives lost, demanding answers, and calling for an end to practices that place people’s safety and dignity at risk.
These are not isolated concerns. They reflect an urgent need for transparency, independent investigation, and accountability. Congress must act to investigate recent deaths involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ensure the facts are made public, and strengthen protections for immigrant families and all communities.
This call is grounded in the courage and leadership of the people most affected: parents protecting their families under impossible circumstances, workers continuing to show up despite uncertainty, elders and young people demanding dignity, and countless community members choosing solidarity over silence.
Earlier this year, that collective courage was recognized when COPAL’s Associate Executive Director, Carolina Ortiz, accepted the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award on behalf of COPAL and the Twin Cities community. COPAL received the honor alongside Haven Watch, the Islamic Association of North America, and Columbia Heights Public Schools.
Now, these Profile in Courage Award recipients are standing together to call on Congress to investigate recent deaths involving ICE, demand full transparency, and ensure meaningful accountability.
Recognition alone is not enough. Courage must lead to action.
